Only watched 1 episode of The Sopranos yesterday. We watched two tonight, leaving just one more to go, the season 3 finale. Tonight we did see by far the funniest episode of the show, Pine Barrens, Christopher and Paulie become Don Knotts and Tim Conway in the "Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight." I was getting bored by the show but this was good stuff, might make me rent Season 4 when it comes out.

Finally got around to repairing my 3rd brake light. On the last Master's Miata Club run, the person following me told me it was dead. As it was twice before it was the wire breaking right near the trunk hinge. Next time it dies it might just stay dead.

Made it to Outback for my birthday "lunch" this evening. Did you know they don't serve kangaroo steaks? I ain't never going back there.

Backed the Miata out of the garage to make it easier to clean some shelves in the garage. I put the top up to keep out the leaves and any other tree debris that might fall in the cockpit. Damn, now that I said that work it reminded me that I should have used the cockpit cover....

Didn't watch any of my birthday movies yet. We are right in the middle a "The Sopranos" marathon. We don't get HBO, so we rent the DVDs when they come out. Season 3 was recently released and I timed my Netflix rentals so that I could get all four discs at around the same time. Thursday, 1& 2 arrived and today the other two were in the mailbox. We watched 1 episode on Thursday and 3 more on Friday. Today was 5 more episodes and we will probably watch the last 4 tomorrow.

Did you know that Outback isn't open for lunch? I sure didn't. Oh, well, we resheduled our dining down-under until Sunday afternoon. I hope it rains hard the whole weekend, I've got a bunch of movies to watch. Mother-in-law gave me Die Hard & Lord of the Rings on DVD for my birthday. My wife gave me A Hard Days Night and the combo of Koyaanisqatsi & Powaqqatsi.

Well tomorrow we will reap the rewards of working an extra hour each day this week, 1/2 day off. We are going to go to Outback for lunch, because it is my birthday and that's where I wanted to go. I'm going to get a Blooming Onion, mmmm, and a big ol'd slab of kangaroo, grilled to perfection....

The mouth of the car has looked kind of naked since I pulled the Alley Gator teeth off, so last week I ordered a different style set of teeth to put back in there. My wife said she would pay for them if I let her pick the style. Our Wabbit Teeth arrived at work today. When the mail clerk brought the package to me it was so messed up that I thought for sure the teeth would be in pieces. They ship them in one of those triangle shaped expressmail tubes from the USPS and it must have gotten wet, letting the weight of other mail bags squish and mangle it, but the teeth are made of sturdy stuff and were just fine. Of course the first thing I did on arrival home is put them on. It is going to take some getting used to this style, right now I think they are a little funny looking. I know what your thinking, any kind of teeth on a car look funny! Even if they are supposed to look like alligator teeth.

The front office folks (with a few exceptions) are assigned to either Group A or Group B and every other week (excluding weeks in which there is a holiday) a group works an extra hour on Monday through Thursday and then gets the Friday afternoon off. The company started this program during the summer and we didn't do it. Maybe because we out of vacation time for the year is why we jumped on the bandwagon now. Today was day one of the extra hour and it didn't seem too long. We got up 15 minutes earlier with thoughts of speeding some morning routines to make up for the other 15. We were so well oiled athat we actually started the commute 15 minutes before we planned. So we took an extra long drive in. As a bonus we were so early that the school busses weren't out and about yet.

The little dark blue swirls are not as noticeable nor as plentiful as I first imagined, changing my course of action from hurry and clean/re-wax to "watchful waiting." I mean if this was harmful in a permanent way they still wouldn't be selling this stuff. While I was doing Miata stuff yesterday I also replaced the two (upper & lower) shift boots. Both of them were broken and cracked horribly. I guess there is less cockpit heat.... While I was in there I notice the oil in the turret was brown and very thin. I guess it is time to change that out. I think that maybe I will buy a couple of quarts and go ahead and change all of the transmission fluid while I'm at it. Maybe next Saturday's project.

Got up this morning and decided to wash the car. Washed it like Monday or something, but it has been doing some raining and we had another Master's Miata Club event this afternoon...

The weather was so sticky humid that I decided to "wash" the car in the garage. I used several towels and some Meguiar's Quik Detailer. The car wasn't too dirty and this way I didn't have to put up the top just to put it back down. Flush with that success I decided to wax the car as well. I have some of that Turtle Wax colored wax in a dark blue that I used before and used it again so I could "cover" up some of the small chips around the car. Later in the day while parked outside in the daylight I noticed that I had dark blue swirls on the car in various places! I hope that it is from not getting the car buffed off good enough.

Top down, no cockpit cover and it didn't matter when at 2:30 this afternoon, the rain that no one predicted, came down. The Miata was home in the garage. The rain at 4:15 did matter, because we were 1 mile into our 6 mile bike ride home.

Put the top down for the trip to work, but almost didn't make it. After we came back out of the bagel place it was sprinkling. Got going in a hurry and for a second there it came down hard enough for us to consider finding a place to put it up. Passed out of the rain and by the time we got to work it had stopped, so we threw on the cockpit cover. Keep in mind the weather channel insisted that the only chance of rain was a 30% afternoon variety. We discovered on the 10:00 walk around the parking lot that sometime during the morning it rained enough to really wet the pavement. The cockpit cover worked wonders this time, the inside stayed totally dry. The top went up this afternoon because Donna went swimming by herself and the clouds still looked ugly. This evening the skys cleared up enough that we went back out for a drive under the nearly full moon.

Made it to work with it down, but put it up. It did rain for most of the day, thereby negating the wash job, but what did I expect. Got an email from Moss Motors, the short shifter kit is on backorder and they don't have an ETA on the next shipment, so they cancelled my order. I think that it is a good thing. I read some of the reviews on Miata.net and now am slightly confused as to which way to go. The Brainstorm one sounds like the right one except for the disclaimer on their site about letting in more transmission noise. Shift boots came today, guess I'll just put them on this weekend as the research conyinues....

Washed the car this afternoon even though it is supposed to rain tomorrow. It was just to filthy not to. It was covered in an even coat of gray, except where I had placed the little RoadsterChat & Master's Miata Club magnets, it was perfectly clean under them.

Ordered the short shifter kit from Moss. They are proud of there Shipping and Handling department - $15 to UPS that 2 lb shifter....

Monday, September 16

The car is way filthy from driving around in the rain all weekend. I couldn't wash it because Donna needed it to go swimming. Buzy after work week, so it may be all the way until Friday before it gets washed. Ordered the 2 rubber shift boots that go on the transmission under the leather boot you see. When I installed the leather a few weeks back I noticed that the top one had a big tear in it. Ididn't place too much emphasis on it until I was lurking over on the Miata.net Forum and disscovered that those torn boots would lead to extra heat in the cockpit. It was then that I put 2 and 2 together. The transmission has been radiating heat for a while now, I just thought it always did that. Now I think that after reading the proceedure for changing these boots I will have to move up the purchase of the short shifter kit so I don't have to do the job twice and potentionally pay for the bottom boot twice.

More rain dodging on the return trip. We left early and it was raining so we put the top down after filling up with gas. The top was way wet from sitting out overnight, so I tried to dry it as best I could before putting it down. Seeing as I was filling up with gas, I thought that I could try using the window-washing squeegee. I tried it and while it got a lot of the water off, because of the pebble grain on the vinyl it left a lot behind. To get as much of the left over water I used those blue towels they keep right there. While not completely dry, it was good enough for now. When we stopped to put the top up at a later time I noticed that there was lots of light blue fuzz all over the top. I guess those little towels are not lint-free.

Saturday, September 14

It was spritzing lightly as we started out for our morning drive, so only Rudy had his top down. When we stopped at the Crossroads of Time for a couple of folks to gas up, everyone else put their tops down for the run through the gap. If you have ever owned a convertible, you know that in a light rain as long as you can keep moving you stay dry, we used this principle throughout the day. The tops did go up a couple times during extended stops. With the roads mostly wet it kept our speed down through the gap, which in a way was a good thing, as I got to study the turns instead of just reacting to them. About 3/4 way through the Honda S2000s started passing by in the opposite direction. There was a group of 50 or so from all over the country in town to do what we were doing, drive the gap. When we got to the gravel lot at the end there were still a few of them there. We chatted a bit with a couple. Saw one that I'm going to get when I win the lottery, light blue metallic exterior with a dark blue leather interior....sweet.

Friday, September 13

We missed any rain on the drive up, although the clouds looked like we might get a downpour, it never materialized. We put it up when we got to the hotel, as everyone wanted a driving break after the 6-hour trip up. But the break didn't last long, as the siren's call of 318 turns just up the road, had us back in our cars in about an hour. We managed to get one complete spirited run through out of both passes. On the north run we came up behind a small car at about 2 miles in that didn't take the hint to pull over until about 5 miles later. On the way back south we had to chill until halfway through and we passed Sheriff’s car #2. We knew there were 2 Sheriff’s cars in the gap, because they passed by us as we took a break in the big gravel lot at the Tennessee end. One stopped and chatted with us a bit and asked if we were enjoying ourselves and told us to be careful, we were. At dinner that evening I balked at putting the top up, but Donna insisted, so up it went. As usual, Donna was right, as it had started to sprinkle before we were done eating.

Our little Miata Club is going to the Gap this weekend and according to the Tail of the Dragon we won't be alone, there are a couple of biker groups and about 60 Honda S2000s coming. Plus we know the Windy City Miata Club will be there as well.

After work I finished most of the preperation for the trip. New plug wires. Fresh oil & filter. Rotated the tires. Bottle of Techron. Tomorrow, if I have time, I'll wash the car.

While I was at it I took off the Alley Gator Teeth. (That is my picture at the bottom of the page.) Saw a picture of my car from a couple of years ago with out the teeth and thought I might go with just the gums showing for a while....

Put it up for last Friday's rainy day and it has been up all week (and in the garage) until tonite. We put it down for a drive in the dark and a quick stop at the store for some breakfast essentials as the fridge is pretty bare before the weekly shopping excursion on Sunday. The Taurus was a nice car for the big trip but once again it is good to be back in a Miata. From last Friday at around 5:00 PM until today at around 5:00 PM we put 2231 miles on the rent-a-car and 120 more on the Civic. Today was another long one too, Lexington, VA back to Aiken, SC, approximately 400 miles. Now all I have to do is find the time to type in my trip notes for the past week, type in the last 8 days worth of RANTS, and get the photos of the Stone Guards up.

Friday, September 6

The Taurus Diaries - Lexington Park, MD to Lexington, VA. Today was a beautiful back-road jaunt through the middle of Virginia. Made a stop in Richmond to visit a cousin of Donna’s. We had a couple of hours to kill before we could get together so we visited the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Nice place to visit and it was in very good shape considering the drought that central Virginia is in the middle of. After lunch with cousin Suzy & her daughter we finished the day’s journey by heading west on US 60, a very straight round with lots of ups and downs until you hit the Blue Ridge Mountains. Then it winds it way to the top where it crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway and then winds itself right back down into the Lexington area. The Taurus didn’t do to bad on the twisty roads, a set of higher performance tires and I’m sure we could have given some of today’s “sports” cars a good run.
That night I went to my second high school football game ever. The last one was almost 29 years ago while in my senior year of New Britain High School. Some friends and I snuck into the Thanksgiving Day game with our big cross-town rivals, Pulaski High. Tonight I "snuck" into the game between cross-county rivals, Rockbridge County High School and Parry McCluer High School. Stuart is the RCHS Marching Band Drum Major and tonight was his first football game in that capacity. Mom Sally is the president of the Band Booster Club, so she asked us to come along and help out. We followed the tractor pulling the trailer of band equipment down the road into the field to keep stuff from falling off. We just waved at the guy guarding the gate as we walked on by. Later that night I thanked Sally for helping fulfill a life-long dream of being able to get backstage somewhere by just saying, "I'm with the band."

Thursday, September 5

The Taurus Diaries - Rutherford, NJ to Lexington Park, MD. We took the Garden State Parkway all the way to it's southern end at Cape May. We arrived just in time to catch the 11:00 AM ferry to Lewes, DE. We then cut across Delaware to Maryland. While passing through Annapolis I thought it might be neat to stop into see the visitor center on the Naval Academy. We made our way through the narrow streets to Gate 1. The nice little Petty Officer at the gate said that you couldn't drive in; you had to park outside and walk in. Fat chance of finding a spot, so we just continued our drive. We picked a stop in Lexington Park because this is where Donna and I meet while we were in the Navy some 20-odd years ago. Patuxent River Naval Air Station’s mission has changed from a Naval Test Pilot Center with a couple of small squadrons to a large Naval Air Warfare Center with nearly 18,000 people working there. Consequently the sleepy little town we knew is now unrecognizable behind the 6 lane road lined with every franchised restaurant known to man and 4-story glass & concrete buildings with cryptic names. Well, I guess Donna and & have changed a bit since 1975 too.

Wednesday, September 4

The Taurus Diaries - Another Short day, New Britain, CT back to Rutherford, NJ. We took the scenic route, stayed on I-84 until we crossed the Hudson River and traveled down 9W and then drove the Palisades Parkway until we hit I-80. We found a neat "Miata" road, NY 318, north of West Point. It hugs the side of Storm King Mountain with nothing but a low rock wall preventing the plunge into the Hudson River hundreds of feet below. We stopped at West point and did a quick tour of the museum and gift shop at the visitor center. They wanted an hour and a half of our time and $7 a piece for the real tour, so we declined.

Tuesday, September 3

The Taurus Diaries - Spent most of the morning driving around visiting stores looking for stuff for Donna & I, my mom and Diane. At lunchtime Donna & I cried "Uncle" and went back to the hotel for a nap. Dinner tonight was stuffed shrimp and was consumed on the porch again. Afterwards Donna & I followed Diane & Allen to get ice cream in Berlin. Allen's Integra needs a new muffler; he sounds just like those rice-boys with their chrome coffee can mufflers. Glad we only had to follow for a short distance or weren't riding in the car.

Monday, September 2

The Taurus Diaries - Rutherford, NJ to New Britain, CT. Easy drive of about 150 miles and one we used to do often when we lived in New Jersey. New Britain is home for my family and we used to try and get back there every couple of months. Surprise, it rained the whole trip. Hertz is going to have to replace the windshield wipers on the car if this keeps up. My brother Paul played chef and grilled up some delicious ribs for dinner. Mom whipped up a big ol' bowl of pasta salad and Donna "tossed" together a Caesars salad to go with the corn on the cob. Sister Diane, her husband Allen and I did our part by staying out of the way and then eating it all up with smiles on our faces. Fitting Labor Day Feast for the traditional last-day-of-summer.

Sunday, September 1

The Taurus Diaries - Lexington, VA to Rutherford, NJ. 400 miles of the Eisenhower Interstate System. A long day made to seem longer by the constant rain. Fortunately traffic was light except for around Allentown, PA on I-78 and about 5 miles of the Garden State Parkway.

Saturday, August 31

The Taurus Diaries - From Rock Hill, Sc to Lexington, VA. Rained awful for the first 1/3 of the trip and then tapered off to nothing by the time we arrived in Lexington. We are staying with friends. Actually we are staying at the home of a childhood friend of Donna's, but only the women's mother, Adele, is at the house today. Sally is off moving in the daughter at the Maine Maritime Academy where Claire is entering her junior year. The son, Stuart, is off with his dad at the Virginia Tech/LSU football game. When we pass through here next Friday we will see everyone but Claire. Good thing the Lewis house had room for us, as we couldn't get a room at any of the local motels. Not only is it move-in day for MMA in Castine, ME it is move-in day at Washington & Lee in Lexington. Plus there is a horse event at the Virginia Horse Center north of town.

Friday, August 30

Top up all day. Parked the Miata in the garage when we got home and there it will sit until at least next Saturday. Loaded up the MSV for the drive to the Columbia, SC airport where we will pick up a Ford Taurus for the weeklong trip up to Connecticut and points in between. Ate at California Dreaming before heading north on I-77 for stop #1, Rock Hill, SC.
